JEE Main 2027 exam pattern and marking scheme

Updated 2026-10-04

JEE Main 2027 is expected to follow the same Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) pattern as the 2025 and 2026 sessions. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has not released the official 2027 information bulletin yet; it usually arrives around October–November. Here is the pattern you should practise on until then.

Check the official source. Final details are published only on jeemain.nta.nic.in. We will update this page when the 2027 bulletin is out.

JEE Main marking scheme

ResponseMarks
Correct answer+4
Wrong answer−1
Not attempted0

Negative marking applies to both sections. A wrong numerical answer costs a mark too. Read our negative marking strategy to see when guessing helps and when it hurts.

How much time do you get per question?

180 minutes for 75 questions works out to 2 minutes 24 seconds per question. In practice, toppers finish easy questions in about a minute and use the saved time on harder ones. Every HeyGyan test shows how long you spent on each question, so you can see where your time goes.

How to use this pattern in your practice

  1. Take at least one full 3-hour mock every week from now, at the same time of day as your exam shift.
  2. Attempt Section A of each subject first, then Section B, unless numericals are your strength.
  3. After each mock, spend as long reviewing mistakes as you spent on the test.

Frequently asked questions

Is there negative marking in JEE Main numerical questions?

Yes. Under the current pattern, a wrong numerical answer also costs 1 mark, the same as a wrong multiple-choice answer.

How many questions are there in JEE Main Paper 1?

75 questions: 25 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, for a total of 300 marks.

Is there any choice in Section B?

No. The optional-question choice was removed from the 2025 session onwards, so all 5 numerical questions in each subject count.

When will the official JEE Main 2027 information bulletin come out?

It is expected around October–November 2026 on jeemain.nta.nic.in. Always check the official bulletin for final details.
