JEE Main gives +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. That one rule decides whether a guess helps or hurts you. Here is the simple maths, so you can decide in seconds during the exam.
The expected score of a guess
"Expected score" means the average marks a guess earns if you made the same kind of guess many times.
| Your situation (multiple-choice) | Chance of being right | Average marks per guess |
|---|---|---|
| Pure guess, no option ruled out | 1 in 4 | +0.25 |
| One option ruled out | 1 in 3 | +0.67 |
| Two options ruled out | 1 in 2 | +1.50 |
| Numerical question, random number | almost 0 | about −1 |
For example, with two options ruled out: ½ × 4 − ½ × 1 = 1.5 marks on average.
What this means on exam day
- Never guess a numerical answer. With no options, a random number loses a mark almost every time.
- Guess on multiple-choice only after eliminating at least one option, and ideally two.
- A pure blind guess is a gamble. It averages a small +0.25, but across a few questions it can easily cost you marks. If you're unsure and short on time, skipping is the safer choice.
- Watch for "trap" options. Examiners design wrong options from common mistakes, so an option that appears quickly isn't always right. Every HeyGyan solution names the trap option and why students fall for it.
Reduce wrong answers, not just guesses
Most negative marks come from questions students were sure about. After each test, tag every wrong answer as a concept gap, silly mistake, calculation error or time pressure. Your progress page then shows which of these costs you the most, and that is the one to fix first.
Frequently asked questions
Should I leave a question blank in JEE Main?
Leave it blank if you cannot eliminate even one option. If you can rule out two options, an educated guess usually adds marks on average.
Is there negative marking for numerical questions in JEE Main?
Yes, a wrong numerical answer costs 1 mark under the current pattern. Since there are no options, a random number is almost never right, so avoid guessing there.
How many marks do students lose to negative marking?
It varies widely. Our test result page shows exactly how many marks wrong answers cost you, so you can track it from mock to mock.
